XCMG ZL50GN Wheel Loader Specifications: What a Quality Inspector Checks Before You Buy

The XCMG ZL50GN is a 5-ton wheel loader with a 3.0 m³ bucket and roughly 162 kW (220 hp) of diesel power. If you are comparing loaders for a contracting fleet, the spec that should anchor your decision is static tipping load, not horsepower. That single number tells you how much stability the machine has before the rear wheels lift. Horsepower wins conversations; tipping load wins jobs.

I'm a quality and brand-compliance manager at a construction equipment importer. I review every machine spec sheet before it reaches customers—roughly 200 unique documents a year. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, 12% of submitted spec sheets had at least one conflict between the brochure spec and the chassis plate. So when I talk about the ZL50GN, I am not reading marketing copy. I am reading the document that the factory and the dealer have to sign.

Specs lie. Not intentionally—but they do. The name ZL50GN has stayed the same while XCMG has updated emissions systems, hydraulic valves, cabs, and bucket options. If you buy a used one, the published spec sheet for the current model may not match what is bolted to the frame. Verify against the physical machine.

In 2022, when I implemented our verification protocol, we caught a batch of 40 ZL50GN brochures where the operating weight on one page was 17,200 kg and 17,500 kg on the next. Normal tolerance is +/- 2%. The vendor claimed it was 'within industry standard.' We rejected the batch, and they reprinted all 40 at their cost. Now every contract includes a spec verification clause.

Where the ZL50GN fits

The ZL50GN sits in the 5-ton wheel loader class, which is the workhorse class for medium construction, quarries, sand and gravel yards, and municipal storage yards. Per XCMG Construction Machinery Co Ltd's published materials (accessed January 2025), the current production configuration lists:

I want to say the breakout force is around 170 kN, but don't quote me on that—the official spec sheet is authoritative. My point is not to memorize the full sheet. My point is to know which numbers drive whether this machine is safe and productive for your specific work.

The spec everyone skips

Most buyers start with horsepower and bucket capacity. The counterintuitive part: none of those tells you whether the machine will tip forward during a hard dig. Static tipping load is the figure that matters. What I mean is the load at which the rear axle starts to lift in a straight static lift test. A loader with more power and a heavier bucket can be less stable if the tipping load is low.

When I reviewed dealer-return inspection forms in 2023, the most common 'surprise' was not mechanical failure. It was operators complaining that a loader felt 'light in the rear' when handling rated bucket loads. That complaint almost always traced back to a spec mismatch—a heavier attachment, a different counterweight, or a missing rear ballast. So when a dealer hands you a spec sheet for a ZL50GN, ask three times: What is the static tipping load? What counterweight is included in that number? What is the load with a bolt-on paddle attachment or forks?

Attachments and site work: paddle attachments, well pumps, concrete drilling

This gets into attachment territory, which is where spec-sheet quality falls apart. I'm not a hydraulic engineer, so I won't tell you which auxiliary kit to order. What I can tell you from a quality-inspection perspective is to verify the linkage geometry and hydraulic flow before you buy.

Paddle attachments

If you are planning to run a paddle attachment—a mixing paddle, a material-handling bucket with paddle-style discharge, or a similar auxiliary tool—do not assume '5-ton loader' means any 5-ton-rated attachment works. The pin centers, quick coupler, and auxiliary flow on the ZL50GN vary by production date. I have seen aftermarket brackets fail because the attachment was designed for a different quick-coupler height. Get the factory drawing from XCMG Construction Machinery Co Ltd's parts department, not from a third-party listing, before you weld anything.

Well pumps

A wheel loader is a poor crane. If you are installing a well pump next to a concrete pad, use a proper hoist or a boom truck. The ZL50GN's 5,000 kg rated load applies to bucket work, not to hanging the load from the bucket tip. I have seen hydraulic cylinders damaged by side-pull and vertical lifts that were never in the design envelope. It may save a rental fee, but a bent cylinder rod is a $2,000 redo plus downtime.

How to drill into concrete

When you mount the pump base, anchor a pad, or fasten attachment storage, you will eventually need to drill into concrete. From a compliance standpoint, the basics are simple: use a hammer drill with a carbide-tipped masonry bit, not a standard twist drill. Drill perpendicular to the surface, clear the dust, and choose the correct anchor for the base material. If you are drilling near an edge or into post-tensioned concrete, stop and get the drawings. Concrete spalling looks like a surface issue, but it is a structural one. I am not a structural engineer—when in doubt, consult one.

Checks I would run before buying a ZL50GN

My experience is based on reviewing roughly 200 machine spec sheets, mostly for 5-ton wheel loaders and excavators. If you are looking at a compact loader or a 7-ton unit, some of this won't transfer. For the ZL50GN, the checklist I use is:

  1. Chassis plate matches the spec sheet. Serial number, engine model, and year of manufacture all need to line up.
  2. Static tipping load is stated with the counterweight included. If the dealer cannot tell you, that is a red flag.
  3. Auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure meet your attachment's requirement. This matters most if you are running a paddle attachment or a high-flow tool.
  4. Parts lead time is realistic. Ask the dealer for a quote on a replacement hydraulic valve and a brake disc. If the answer is 'we will call you,' treat it as a warning.
  5. Emission-compliance documentation is current. As of January 2025, XCMG sells different ZL50GN configurations in different regions; the local spec sheet needs to match the machine that is imported into your market.

When to walk away

No machine is the right answer for every site. I recommend the ZL50GN for 5-ton-class loading, truck loading, aggregate handling, and general bulk material work. But if you are dealing with any of these, look elsewhere:

  • If the ZL50GN is going to run a paddle attachment all day, a compact track loader or skid steer with higher hydraulic flow will usually do the job cheaper—and it won't tear up the site.
  • If you are a homeowner trying to set a well pump on a concrete slab, a 17,500 kg wheel loader is overkill. Rent a mini excavator for the day.
  • If your work is mostly vertical lifting or long-reach handling, a telehandler or a crane is the correct class, not a wheel loader.

I have mixed feelings about spec-sheet shopping. On one hand, specifications are the only objective starting point. On the other, two machines with identical numbers can feel completely different in the seat. The ZL50GN is a solid 5-ton loader—for the right job. Check the tipping load, verify the attachment compatibility, and let the work site, not the brochure, make the final decision.
