But I do know that a dealer who can confirm a delivery window and a backup plan is providing something real. A lower price with a probably delivery date is a risk, not a deal. People think expensive dealers are expensive because they sell premium machines. In my experience, it's often the other way around: dealers who can be trusted to show up when they say they will can charge more.

If anything, the well pump example stuck with me. A well pump isn't chosen by looking at the pump alone. You choose it by measuring the well, the water level, and the required flow. Equipment is no different. The machine is the answer to a question. You have to figure out the question first.

And when time is tight, pay for certainty. The dealer who can guarantee Friday delivery is worth more than the one who says probably. I've learned that the hard way. At least, that's been my experience buying for a small company where every day of downtime shows up on the job schedule.
