  • Scenario C: You're a contractor with a mixed fleet, and you need to standardize on one platform to reduce training and inventory costs.

Scenario A: The 'We Have a Good Shop' Case (Where XCMG Can Shine)

If you've got a half-decent maintenance crew and you're on a site where you can manage downtime, an XCMG mining truck can be an excellent value.

Scenario C: The 'Mixed Fleet' Case (Where It Gets Complicated)

Maybe you're like me now—running a mix of brands. You've got some Caterpillar, some Komatsu, maybe an old Euclid that refuses to die. You're thinking about standardizing. Can XCMG be part of that?

It can, but it's not straightforward.

The compatibility issue: XCMG uses a mix of drivetrains—some Cummins, some Allison, some proprietary. That means you can't always swap parts across your fleet. If you standardize on engine type (e.g., all Cummins), you can share some spare parts and maintenance procedures. But if you're mixing engine brands, you're doubling your inventory complexity.

The training issue: Your mechanics need to learn a new platform. If you have a high turnover rate, that training cost can add up. I'd suggest allocating at least a week of on-site training for every new truck model you introduce.

A contrarian take (that might surprise you): Sometimes, the best choice for a mixed fleet is actually to avoid XCMG. If you already have a well-oiled maintenance program for Caterpillar or Komatsu, adding a different brand just adds complexity. The 'savings' from the cheaper truck might be swallowed by the cost of training, spare parts, and downtime. I've seen it happen.

But if you're starting from scratch or you're willing to manage two parallel maintenance systems, XCMG can be a competitive option. We now run them at our main site where support is good, and they've earned their place. But it took a lot of work to get there.

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In (Without Making My Mistake)

If you're reading this and trying to decide whether to buy an XCMG mining truck, ask yourself these three questions.

  1. How far is your nearest dealer that stocks parts for the specific model you want? If it's more than a 2-hour drive, you're in Scenario B territory. I'd recommend a premium brand.
  2. How good is your maintenance team? Can they handle diagnosing electrical gremlins without calling the manufacturer for every issue? If yes, XCMG might work. If no, stick with something you know.
  3. What is the total cost of downtime for this truck? If losing one truck for a week would cost you more than $30,000, you should probably pay more upfront for a truck with better parts availability and dealer support.

There's no magic formula. But if you answer those questions honestly, you'll have a much better chance of picking the right truck—and you won't end up like me, writing a mea culpa years later.

One last thing: If a vendor tells you their truck is perfect for every situation, walk away. The vendor who said 'this truck is great, but you probably don't want it for your site' earned my trust. I bought something from them later. But that's a story for another day.
